Everyone loves their freedom. Even as we get older, we want to maintain our independence. We want to age in place and enjoy our chosen lifestyles.

Along with aging comes a greater opportunity to be vigilant about safety. Whether it’s you or someone you love, taking a few extra precautions to ensure your well-being is always worth the effort.

Below are the most helpful types of safety products that every home with older adults should consider using.

Stability

Grab bars are becoming commonplace in homes because of the stability they provide in bathrooms and other places where falls are likely to happen. Since they’re affordable and relatively easy to install, grab bars are a simple step to take to help seniors stay stable throughout their living space.

You can also help prevent slips and falls — the most common accidents among older adults— by installing slip-resistant flooring. Many options are available such as non-slip vinyl, slip-resistant adhesive strips, grippy floor mats, and neoprene floor runners. Some of these options are especially useful in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, or other places where floors can get wet.

Stairs

Speaking of falling, stairs can be a significant hazard. But you can conquer any stairway by installing a stairlift, which gives a safe and secure ride up and down stairs. Numerous companies offer stairlift products, which can be custom-fit for any shape or size of stairway.

Even just one or two steps can pose an unsafe obstacle. Ramps have become a popular choice for helping seniors navigate the ups and downs of their homes. Ramps come in a huge variety of styles, lengths, and materials, and can be custom-fit — indoors or outdoors — for any uneven surface or entryway.

Non-slip adhesive tape or texturized non-slip paint is also a good idea for wood stairs or in homes where the residents feel confident in using stairs but prefer an extra measure of safety.

Showering

We’ve already mentioned slip-proofing wet surfaces and installing grab bars, and there are other products that can promote bathroom safety as well. Step-in showers and bathtubs make it easier and safer for residents to enter and exit the bathing area. These types of products require professional installation, and they’re worth it for the health and well-being of your loved ones.

It’s also a good idea to place a non-slip chair or bench in the shower. Many models and styles are available, including ones with armrests or other stability features. Be sure to measure the area for a proper fit, and don’t forget to double-check the weight limit of any particular product.

Sound

When hearing becomes an issue, look for products that can help a senior be alerted to things normally associated with sounds such as doorbells, smoke alarms, or kitchen appliances. Some manufacturers offer devices with lights or other visual alerts that can let a resident know when their attention is required.

Sleeping

Everyone needs a good night’s sleep! Stay safe during sleep time by exploring bed options that make it easier to get in and out of bed. Raising or lowering the bed or adding a bed bench can be options.  A variety of models are available that come with bedrails or adjust to a more comfortable sleeping position — which can be critical for keeping the body rested and strong.

One extra tip: Remove loose rugs from bedrooms and other living areas. While they may look pretty, they present a common tripping hazard for seniors and people who aren’t sure-footed.
